PROCESS COLORS

If Alwan ToolBox conformance assessment indicates a non-conformity of one or more criteria, action should be taken in order to bring your print device in conformity with the chosen Reference Printing Conditions (RPC) or Dataset.
Here are some tips on possible causes of non-conformity and suggestions on how to address them for a conventional (offset, flexo, gravure, etc.) or digital (inkjet, toner, etc.) printing system.

ISO 12647-2:2013 ASSESSMENT

Graphic technology – Process control for the production of half-tone colour separations, proof and production prints– Part 2: Offset lithographic processes.

Conventional (no color management applied to the control strip)

  • Primaries ∆E
  • Black Primary ∆E
    • Ink formulation may not be appropriate. Check with your ink manufacturer.
    • Ink density/solid may be too low or too high. Find the print density that gives minimum solid ∆E.

Ink conformity and minimum ∆E can be found using Alwan PrintStandardizer InkZone.

  • Mid-Tone TVI
  • Shadow TVI
  • Mid-Tone Spread
    • Press tonal reproduction should be adjusted using curves on the plate or cylinder RIP.

TVI curves can be adjusted using Alwan PrintStandardizer calibration.

Digital (color management applied to the control strip)

  • Primaries ∆E
  • Black Primary ∆E
  • Mid-Tone TVI
  • Shadow TVI
  • Mid-Tone Spread
    • Your printer color management needs to be fixed. Update your print device ICC profile and check that your color management settings (profiles, rendering intents, purities, separation options, etc.) are set appropriately.

Accurate device profile can be built using Alwan Hydra Profiling®.

Accurate color management and device conformance can be achieved using Alwan ColorHub.

ISO 12647-7:2016 ASSESSMENT

Graphic technology – Process control for the production of halftone colour separations, proof and production prints – Part 7: Proofing processes working directly from digital data.

Digital (color management applied to the control strip)

  • Substrate Color
    • If you are producing proofs, choose "Absolute Colorimetric" rendering intent to simulate reference dataset substrate color on your production substrate.
If "Absolute Colorimetric" does not help or if substrate simulation is not accepted, you need to choose a substrate whose color is as close as possible to your dataset substrate color.

In most cases, substrate color difference in itself is not critical as eye adapts to the media white point, however, what can be critical is the color shift of the device gamut due to this difference which may make most of the color criteria below out of tolerance.

In this case, we recommend that you use Alwan ColorHub Hybrid Colorimetric rendering intent. .

  • Primaries ∆E
